Persian Lily

Persian Lily

(36ā€-48ā€ tall) Persian Lily (Fritillaria persica) is an elegant favorite that’s been in garden cultivation for many years. The bulbs emerge as gray-green stems covered in lance-shaped, slightly twisted foliage. In mid-spring they develop blossoms at the top third of the stem. Stems can contain anywhere from 7 to 30 nodding plum-purple bells that contrast perfectly with the gray foliage below. A well-drained sunny spot is a must for this Middle Eastern native as it is prone to rot if kept too wet – particularly over the winter. However, some afternoon shade is welcome if planted in very hot areas of the country. Rich soil is also recommended. Plant bulbs 8ā€ deep and space 9ā€ apart. Fritillaries often give off a musky scent on a sunny day – probably one of the reasons they are so deer resistant. Robust and vigorous – a great garden bulb for the adventurous gardener!
